St Mary's Church was packed to capacity for Chepstow Choral Society's annual Christmas programme of carols, choral items and seasonal readings. The format of an Sunday afternoon programme in the run-up to Christmas has been very enthusiastically received by the audience, and the programme provided exactly the right balance for the occasion, with well-known and loved choral items, some lesser known ones, traditional family carols and a mixture of appropriate readings. The choir was joined by St Johns-on-the-Hill School choir, and the organist was Mr Peter Cook. The whole occasion was a delightful alternative to the frenzy of the pre-Christmas rush, and was certainly fully appreciated by everyone present. Chepstow Choral Society has been delighted by the feedback, and thanks all supporters for their continued interest and commitment. At a very busy time of year for everyone it is very much appreciated that so many were prepared to turn out on a very cold and foggy afternoon to enjoy the music and to participate in a lovely pre-Christmas occasion.
The Society has now enjoyed a short break before resuming rehearsals immediately after the New Year holiday. The major concert for 2006 will be the Mozart 250th Anniversary Concert on Saturday April 1st at St Mary's Church, when the principal item on the programme will be the Requiem. Chepstow Choral Society is delighted to be welcoming outstanding soloists once again to Chepstow, including Charlotte Ives (soprano) and Edward Price (baritone) who will both be making return visits. They will be joined by Sian Menna (alto) and Christopher Bowen (tenor) and a first class orchestra of young instrumentalists. All four soloists are based in London, and Edward, Christopher sing with the BBC Singers. The Society is hoping for a maximum audience for this concert, which will also appropriately be a Passiontide concert, taking place two weeks before Easter. Tickets and further information will be available shortly.
Chepstow Choral Society is directed by Graham Bull. Rehearsals take place on Wednesday evenings at Chepstow Leisure Centre (Drama Room) from 7.30pm - 9.30pm. New singing members are welcome, particularly tenors and basses, and it is not too late to join the choir for this 2005/2006 season - if you would like further information about the musical and rehearsal schedule , please contact Marjorie Duerden on (01291) 623310. The Society is also eager to build on its increasingly successful patrons list, and information relating to this and other aspects may be obtained from the secretary Frances Gray (tel. 622465).
